 There are three valve cover bolt patterns. The first valve covers from 1955 through mid 1959 had a staggered bolt pattern. The upper (intake side) bolts were slightly closer together than the outer (exhaust side) bolts.

 The Second bolt pattern see Fig.3.10.6a used from mid 1959 through 1986 is very similar, except the upper bolts were moved out to the same distance between them as the lower bolts.

 The third bolt pattern from 1987 on- has four bolts down the center of the valve cover as shown in Fig. 3.10.6b this along with the new style gaskets was done to help prevent oil leaks from the valve covers.
